All about Gastric Bypass Surgery
One of the various available Bariatric Surgeries for losing weight is Gastric Bypass Surgery. It gets the work done by altering the digestive system framework that reduces the amount of food intake and absorption. Due to serious risks a thorough analysis of the patient condition is required before planning to perform the surgery.
An ideal candidate should be morbidly obese with Body Mass Index above 40 or with a body mass index between 35-39 with serious health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure.
An examination about certain facts like commitment to adopt lifelong changes regarding the dietary habits and practice of physical exercise, medical condition of the body is done before considering you as an ideal candidate for surgery. Surgery is only performed once, because of the risks like bleeding and leaking in gastrointestinal tract. If you regain weight, then you may have to lose it naturally by dieting and regular practice of exercises. Undergoing the surgery will not shed all the extra pounds it only offers help. One has to be on strict diet and physical exercise after undergoing the surgery to lose weight.
It is essential to be aware of what is being done, associated risks and the required post surgery care before undergoing it. Gastric bypass surgery as the term implies, involves bypassing a part of stomach and small intestine by creating a small pouch out of stomach and stapling it along with a part of small intestine. This reduces the surface area of absorption and a few calories are only absorbed.
Post surgery care involves regulation on eating habits. Initially, you will be allowed to have liquids until the stomach heals followed by soft and solid foods. The whole process takes about 12 weeks of time. Due to rapid weight loss body experiences side effects like weakness, cold, dry skin, hair loss, and mood changes. About 50 to 60 percent of the weight can be lost in the first two years after surgery. In addition to losing weight certain health conditions like diabetes, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol levels can be improved.
Similar to other surgeries, gastric bypass surgery is associated with risks like death, leaking of stomach lines, hernia, blood clots, vitamin deficiencies, dehydration, reduced blood sugar and many more. Most of these symptoms arise due to reduced stomach volume. To overcome symptoms like vitamin deficiency and dehydration it is suggested to consume small nutritious meals, through chewing, drinking water slowly, and intake of vitamin supplements. Some foods may cause discomfort to the stomach, that’s why it is suggested to be careful while trying new foods. Avoid dry, sticky or stringy foods. Fiber rich foods can help in improving the digestion.
Commitment is the key for successful weight loss regime and maintaining the accomplished weight, which is another hard task. It demands consumption of low sugar foods; avoid fat and calorie rich foods and have a regular practice of exercise. Counting on what you eat would be helpful too, for you to have control on what you eat. Make it a habit to read labels while purchasing food products.
Reckoning the importance of the surgery, most of the insurance companies are providing coverage and you should verify it with the insurer.
