If you’re like me, you probably work in an office environment behind a computer monitor for at least 8 hours of your day. Most of that time is spent sitting and involves very little movement or exercise. As anyone with a mind knows, this is not very conducive to keeping weight off, or a fit physique. But have no fear, there are plenty of ways to get the rest of your body moving and involve physical activity while sitting behind your desk for a large part of your day.

There is a great article that actually discusses fitness tips for chair bound computer users.

If the only part of your body that’s subjected to a real workout every day is your brain, it might be time to consider strategies for getting the rest of you moving. Other health issues aside, a lack of physical activity can have a detrimental effect on mental performance.

In short, here are some of the tips:

Take a break every 30-45 minutes. Get up and walk around.

At lunch time, eat half of what you brought and take a 10 minute walk. Consider walking to a destination to eat your lunch.

Use basic exercise equipment. Exercise bands, exercise ball, or a jump rope.

Get a wireless headset and walk around while making calls.

Ever since Nintendo’s Wii Fit first debuted, the question has always been whether or not it can help you lose weight. If you haven’t heard, the Wii Fit is a video game for the Nintendo Wii console that uses a balance board that incorporates game activities that helps the player exercise.

There have been a number of reviews of the Wii Fit, both good and bad, but the ultimate question still remains, can you actually lose weight using the Wii Fit?

After reading a number of reviews I have come to the conclusion that the Wii Fit is a great exercise tool for children and adults that otherwise have little to no exercise whatsoever. The Wii Fit doesn’t offer a serious enough workout regiem, having short activities almost makes it impossible to keep your heart rate at a consitant level that would allow you to burn any significant number of calories.

I will still say that personally I think Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii Fit, and the Wii console in general. No other video game console producer has been able to incorporate full body activity with a console game better than Nintendo.

The Wii Fit is defenitely a way to burn a few calories, but I wouldn’t count on losing weight by playing. If you are an average size adult, you are much better off hitting the gym, or taking a daily walk then playing the Wii Fit if you want to lose weight.

Should you use a Treadmill or an Elliptical?

A very common question and debate in the fitness realm is which is better, the treadmill or the elliptical? While you may find many answers to why the treadmill is better, or why the elliptical is better, I’m going to give both advantages and disadvantages to using a treadmill and an elliptical.

Should you use a Treadmill?

There is no question that using a treadmill is a great cardio exercise. If your goal is to burn calories, the treadmill will most certainly help you achieve your goal. One sometimes obvious reason to use a treadmill over an elliptical is if you enjoy running, jogging, or walking. On a treadmill, you are not confined to specific movements like you are with the elliptical. Sometimes I prefer hopping on the treadmill because I can run for a while, then slow down my pace and walk for a while, then run again. Changing pace on an elliptical can certainly be done, but it’s not the same as changing pace on a treadmill.

Should you use an Elliptical?

Treadmills have been around much longer than the elliptical machine, but in recent years, the elliptical is becoming much more popular in the fitness world. An elliptical offers a higher intensity workout, and allows you to work more muscles than the treadmill does providing you are using the arm handles while running on the elliptical. In most ways, the elliptical is an overall better cardio machine than the treadmill. Here are some reasons why.

Easier on the knees. You are not impacting them during your exercise.

Overall higher intensity workout. You can burn more calories than on a treadmill in the same amount of time.

Elliptical is safer to use. When you stop, the elliptical stops.

The Treadmill or the Elliptical?

In the end, the opinions of everyone else do not really matter. If you feel comfortable using the treadmill, use it. If the elliptical is easier on your knees and is more comfortable, then use the elliptical. The key is to use a machine that you enjoy, so that you will continue to exercise on a regular basis.
