Talking With Your Teen About Weight Loss
It can be quite difficult as a parent talking to your child about weight loss especially when your teen has acknowledged that a problem exist. Issues such as this needs to be handled with extreme caution.
If you decide to talk to your teen about it, you can start with an approach like this ” A close friend of mine was talking to me about this particular weight loss program he just started that is really working for him. Would you be interested in hearing more about it?”
if your teen shows interest, you don’t have to talk about it right away. You can revisit the issue at a more convenient time since your child is willing to listen. You can tell your child that you will get more information from your close friend so that you can give him more details.
if your teen shows no interest, seem surprised or angry about the question, just put on a smile and say that you understand. You can tell your child that you didn’t mean to hurt his feelings, that it was something you noticed and you wanted to see if he would be willing to have a chat with you. Give yourself like a week or two to see if he would approach you about the issue. If he does not approach you, revisit the issue again.
You want to try as much as possible not to hurt his feelings. let your teen know that you love him, you want the best for him and you are concerned about his health. If you feel that your teen is not comfortable talking with you, you should get someone he will be comfortable with.
Regardless of whether your teen chooses to have a conversation with you or not, here are some do’s and don’t you should take into account before speaking with your teen about weight loss.
Never blame you child about been obese. If your child is obese, it’s probably because your child was not taught to eat healthy from the onset.
You have to become a better role model for your teen. This means eating healthy, exercising and supporting your teen in loosing weight.
Never ever compare your child with someone else. You can diminish his self confidence which may lead to depression.
Encourage your child to take part in more physical activities. Get him involved in sports or anything that will get him moving.
Go food shopping with your teen so that he can pick out the healthy foods and snack that he wants.
